Mac vs. Linux: Which is More Secure

In last month’s column, I said “I’m more secure on a Mac than I was on Windows XP.” Some of you asked how Linux fares in that comparison. To that, I’ll say I’m marginally more secure on Linux than on a Mac, but I prefer a Mac anyway. I can almost see my inbox filling with flames from you penguin lovers everywhere, but let me explain my opinion.

McAfee flags up blog-based Trojan

Security company McAfee has issued an alert about a Trojan that is insinuating itself into blogs, emails and instant messages. The Trojan, which only came to light yesterday, was reported by www.securitywatch.eweek.com to already have found its way on to hundreds of blog posts. Known as Spam-Mespam, it works by inserting a link into blog responses inviting people to click on a link to a ’fun video’. Since the link appears to have been posted by a blogger, anyone reading the post may be fooled into thinking the author is recommending the link.

New MySpace, Skype virus threats spotted

MySpace.com pages are being infected with a link to a computer virus, and another may be targeting Skype’s text chat for the first time, a Finnish computer security firm said Tuesday. User pages at the popular social networking site MySpace are being modified by versions of the Zlob Trojan, which is installing code that overlays its own window on top of the page, F-Secure Corp.’s chief researcher Mikko Hypponen wrote in the company’s security blog.

Yahoo Answers.. spybot..browsers

Q. On your recommendation, I tried the Yahoo Answers site and was disappointed by the quality of the questions. I know Google Answers went out of business. Is there another site with a quality Q and A discourse? A. I still say Yahoo Answers is a great idea gone horribly wrong. If they hired enough moderators and used user moderators, the site would be okay because the spam and junk would be quickly removed. But as it is it is a chat room for teens who quickly create another Yahoo account as soon as theirs is suspended.
