IF you think you’ve finally secured your enterprise environment, sorry, the game just changed. The internet and anywhere access has turned information technology security on its head, industry heavyweights told this year’s RSA Conference in San Francisco. The idea that you can defend your network perimeter and keep your data in grand isolation, like a king in his castle, is dead. Like a king, data needs to move around and has to be protected wherever it happens to be.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and VeriSign Inc., which manages domain registry names, say fraudulent e-mails claiming to be from them should be considered a malicious attempt to collect personal data. The FDIC and VeriSign sent a memo Feb. 23 to various financial institutions warning them about the false e-mails, which request recipients to run a “security guard script” to secure Web sites.

Oracle’s slated to be the whipping boy in two Oracle-specific Black Hat briefings and will be among the clump of databases faulted in one general database communication protocol weakness briefing. Expect at least one zero-day exploit and an entirely new class of attack technique, all with Oracle in their crosshairs. Oracle’s up for being a whipping-boy at Black Hat 2007 Washington, Feb. 28-March 1, with two briefings dedicated to Oracle security and/or insecurity.

Oklahoma city Officials with a task force of state, local and federal agencies targeting identity theft say Oklahoma has dropped from 18th in the nation to 23rd in the percentage of residents whose identity has been stolen. Still identity theft is the most common consumer complaint in the state and ranks as the top complaint for the seventh straight year.

The government’s controversial new access card will undoubtedly be forged, a Liberal backbencher says. Queensland MP Steven Ciobo’s comments, made in parliament, are at odds with the government’s claim that the card is a solution to welfare fraud. “I have no doubt that the access card will and can be fraudulently reproduced in the future,” Mr Ciobo said.
