Secure card maker HID Corp. is objecting to a demonstration of a hacking tool at this week’s Black Hat Federal security conference in Washington, D.C. that could make it easy to clone a wide range of so-called “proximity” door access cards. HID has sent a letter to IOActive, a security consulting firm, accusing Chris Paget, IOActive’s director of research and development, of possible patent infringement over a planned presentation, “RFID for beginners,” on Wednesday. More states are taking the sex offender registry to the next step by tracking a wider swath of convicts, and an effort is currently proposed in Wisconsin. Rep. Scott Suder of Abbotsford is drafting legislation to set up a violent offender registry at the urging of friends of murder victim Leah Gustafson. She was killed by neighbor last year in Superior.

Breaking the locks on the federal government’s proposed access card will be extremely tough but by no means impossible for an enterprising crook, technology experts say. If approved, the card will consolidate a string of welfare and health cards for adult citizens. The legislation is currently before federal parliament. The controversial card will replace the Medicare card and become compulsory for any Australian who wants to access up to 16 other government health and welfare services.

Verizon Wireless today announced that it has obtained a permanent injunction and default judgment in one of its lawsuits against wireless spam, bringing the case to its conclusion. The default judgment prohibits Specialized Programming and Marketing LLC and its owner, Charles Henderson, from sending further spam to Verizon Wireless customers and requires them to pay damages in excess of $200,000.

About one-third of Internet users in the U.S. have used a wireless connection to surf the Web or check e-mail, according to a survey released Sunday. The survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project showed that 34 percent of Internet users have gone online through Wi-Fi service or a cell phone network, including 27 percent who have logged on from somewhere other than their home or workplace.
