Some European countries are proposing outlawing the use of fake information to open e-mail accounts or set up Web sites, a move intended to help terror investigations but which could face resistance on a privacy-conscious continent. The German and Dutch governments have taken the lead on the proposals, crafting legislation that would make it illegal to provide false information to Internet service providers and require phone companies to save detailed records on customer usage.

A member of the committee tasked with providing recommendations to the U.S. government on the formation of a nationwide health information network (NHIN) has resigned, noting his concerns about the lack of progress on security and privacy policies that would protect patient data. Paul Feldman, co-chair of the American Health Information Community’s (AHIC) Confidentiality, Privacy and Security Workgroup, submitted his resignation Wednesday in a letter to Robert Kolodner. Kolodner is the interim National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Identity theft is a growing threat to everyone, and none more so than the elderly, who the scam artists tend to prey upon. The United States Postal Service is taking a position in the forefront of the battle against ID theft. “We especially are concerned about postal fraud,” said Marshall Haskins, Postmaster for Tecumseh and Clinton, “but, as a public service, we would like to alert everyone about how the ID thieves can affect anyone through any medium and drain their resources in a minute.” Haskins said that the ruse that mail fraud experts, telemarketers, “phishers,” and other scammers use is not only illegal but also immoral, and he is launching a local campaign to alert people on ways to protect themselves from devastating financial loss. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service offers free videocassettes and DVDs to the public that are not only informative, but also actually well produced [...]

A US man has pleaded guilty to charges of writing and distributing a Trojan horse designed to steal usernames and passwords. Richard C Honour, 31, faces a maximum five years in prison and a $250,000 fine after admitting releasing the malware.The Trojan affected users of the DarkMyst IRC chatroom, which is popular with online gamers. Using the name ’Fyle/Anatoly’, Honour sent messages to other IRC users claiming to contain links to online movies.
