Amazon tribes to get free internet

Brazil will offer free satellite internet connections to indigenous tribes in the Amazon as part of its latest effort to crack down on illegal logging in the world’s largest tropical rain forest. “It’s a way to open communications between indigenous communities, former slave villages, coconut crackers, river fishermen and the rest of society,” said Environment Minister Marina Silva on Thursday after signing an accord putting the internet plan in place.

Key-loggers become cyber-criminal tool of choice

Key-loggers pose more risks to business and home PC users than any other tool used by cyber-criminals, security experts have claimed. A report published today by security vendor Kaspersky Lab said that the number of key-loggers rose by more than 500 per cent between January 2003 and July 2006.

Successful cyberattacks against DOD drop

The number of successful cyberattacks against Defense Department networks and information systems declined from about 130 in January 2005 to about 40 in January 2007, Air Force Lt. Gen. Charles Croom, director of the Defense Information Systems Agency, told a House Armed Services Committee subcommittee hearing March 28. The number of what Croom called “cyber incidents” grew from 16,000 in 2004 to 23,000 in 2005 and 30,000 in 2006, he said, in addition to cyberscans running about four times that number each year.

Firms face disaster over WAN bottlenecks

Two-thirds of large enterprises don’t have enough bandwidth to replicate or backup their remote sites in an emergency, according to a survey of IT managers and directors. IT managers simply don’t have enough bandwidth to meet the demands of their disaster recovery plans, and most of them will find a big chunk of their sites isolated in a disaster, according to the report, produced by Forrester Consulting, and commissioned by F5 Networks.
