Laptop theft compromises childrens’ data

Three laptops, one of which contains the names, addresses and dates of birth of 11,000 children in Nottinghamshire have gone missing from Nottinghamshire County Teaching Primary Care Trust. The computers went missing on 21 March. The trust, which was only set up last October, says it has written to all parents of the children involved, warning them of the theft.

Dangerous document formats and social engineering

If you’ve been reading our diaries for last couple of months, no doubt that you are aware of the huge number of exploits directed toward various Office applications, mainly Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. For quite some time a lot of administrators (us included) told people to convert documents to other (safer) formats, one of them being RTF (Rich Text Format). Although this format is proprietary, the specification is publicly available so a lot of word processors support this format.

In Portugal, ICANN debates a plan to give pxxx site ‘.xxx’ domain name

A formal communique was expected Thursday from ICANN’s Governmental Advisory Committee on a plan to give pxxxographic websites their own “.xxx” domain name. Government officials deliberated behind closed doors Wednesday, but issued no public statement about their intent or plans for the voluntary “.xxx” Internet address.

There is a challenge to engineers to design products and services which can be enjoyed whilst their users’ privacy is protected. Just as security features have been incorporated into car design, privacy protecting features should be incorporated into the design of products and services that rely on divulging personal information.

E-crime education not working says Symantec

Efforts to educate users about phishing attacks are badly communicated and lack focus, according to a leading IT security expert. William Beer, European director of Symantec’s Security Practice, told delegates at the annual E-crime summit in London yesterday that all the “great work being done to build e-commerce is at risk” if online fraud continues to rise.
