When five Microsoft guys started posting internal videos for the world to see, many at the famously secretive company freaked. And that was before thousands of in-house bloggers took to their keyboards. A dispatch from the front lines of transparency. Lenn Pryor knew his little project was going to upset some of his colleagues at Microsoft. And sure enough, when the junior exec unveiled a Web site called Channel 9 in April 2004, the organization reacted like a dog whose tail had been stepped on. You could hear the yelps and howls all over Redmond. Pryor started to sweat.

The European Commission “clearly breached” its obligations when it agreed a passenger data sharing scheme with the US, the European Parliament has been told. The opinion was given just as negotiations on a new deal are begun. It also emerged that the US does not believe that it needs a new data sharing deal in order to demand details on Europeans flying into the US.

The Serious Organised Crime Agency has hit back at claims that it does not have the necessary remit or resources to tackle e-crime. Bill Hughes, the director-general of the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), said it had made progress in developing international relationships in the effort to combat cybercrime.
