It all starts with corporate policies around data management. This is not a new idea. We’ve had issues around various types of storage for years. Whether it’s security, backup, disaster recovery or business continuity, there is a certain lack of understanding — in some cases a total lack of understanding as to what corporate data is being stored — and even noncorporate data that ends up on corporate storage.

There are two areas where data deduplication, or single-instance storage, can help. Deduplication is fairly common today in backups using a variety of appliances or software. Since this is backup, however, it doesn’t address the immediate problem of unstructured data growth at the source. There are deduplication products that can help at the source, but they’re not as popular today because the added workload in identifying similar blocks or byte sequences, or files, depending on the level of deduplication you choose.

With online criminals exploiting an unpatched flaw in Windows, security vendor eEye Digital Security Inc. has come forward with an unofficial fix for the problem. The unofficial temporary patch, published early today, fixes a bug in the way Windows processes animated cursor files, which are used to create cartoon-like cursors in Windows. Security researchers at McAfee Inc. first reported the bug Wednesday evening, saying it has been used in Web-based attacks. Microsoft has said that it will eventually fix the problem and it generally recommends that users avoid this type of third-party fix for its products. But in the past, similar patches from eEye and others have been downloaded by tens of thousands of Windows users unwilling to wait for Microsoft’s updates.

The most important issue is legal discovery. You may not know what you have or how to find it, so it can be very difficult to find the files that may be required by a court of law. It’s also difficult to enforce data deletion (aka scrubbing) if you have not categorised your data. Recently, a US judge gave a large chipmaker 30 days to recover about 1,000 lost emails that should have been kept for an antitrust lawsuit. Delays and the inability to locate required data can result in very costly penalties to your business.
