Senate panel approves benefits for same-sex partners of federal employees

A Senate committee approved legislation Wednesday allowing same-sex partners of federal employees to receive employment benefits.
The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee passed the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act with a bipartisan voice vote. It must be approved by the full Senate and the House before enactment.

On Tuesday night, Deb Fischer, chairwoman of the Nebraska state senate, beat GOP favorite Jon Bruning to win the Nebraska Republican U.S. Senate primary. Palin endorsed Fischer while former presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum supported Bruning.

This last tidbit of information was read to a federal jury here Wednesday by Abbe Lowell, the lead defense attorney for former senator John Edwards, who is accused of violating campaign finance laws by allegedly failing to report $1 million spent to cover up his affair with Hunter during the 2008 presidential campaign.
