Number of people seeking unemployment benefits barely changed, reflecting weak job market

WASHINGTON — The number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell slightly last week, a sign the job market isn’t getting much better.
Applications ticked down by 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 404,000, the Labor Department said Thursday.
The four-week average declined for the third straight week to 408,000. That’s the lowest average in eight weeks.

Herman Cain’s 999 plan: a misleading pitch

“9-9-9 will pass, and it is not the price of pizza because, it has been well-studied and well-developed… The problem with that analysis [that it will not raise enough revenue] is that it is incorrect. The reason it’s incorrect is because they start with assumptions that we don’t make. Remember, 9- 9-9 plan throws out the current tax code. … Now, what 9-9-9 does, it expands the base. When you expand the base, we can arrive at the lowest possible rate, which is 9-9-9.”

How the euro crisis hurts national parks

Uncertainty in the euro region is rattling markets and parliaments around the world and it also means fewer Europeans are visiting our national parks, according to a veteran park observer.
Foreigners from Europe and Asia have long been some of the most loyal visitors to sites including Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and the Grand Tetons. But European visits are down slightly this year at 392 sites operated by the National Park Service, Ron Tipton, vice president for policy with the National Parks Conservation Association, a private group advocating for the NPS.

Obama raises $ 70 million for campaign, DNC

President Barack Obama collected $43 million for his 2012 re-election campaign and helped raise an additional $27 million for the Democratic National Committee over the past three months, according to an email sent to supporters by campaign manager Jim Messina this morning.
“If I could sum up this last quarter in a few words: You came through,” wrote Messina. He added that more than 600,000 people had donated to the campaign over the between July 1 and Sept. 30 and that 98 percent of the contributions were $250 or less.

Michele Bachmann heads to Iowa, as Cain surges

Michele Bachmann’s path since she edged out Rep. Ron Paul in the Iowa straw poll has been marked by steady decline, major staff changes, and the entrance and surge of several candidates who cut into her dominance among social conservatives.
But her strategy remains the same: Win the Iowa Caucus or go home.
