Obama gets win as Congress passes free-trade agreements

Congress resoundingly approved long-stalled trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia and Panama late Wednesday, authorizing the most significant expansion of trade relations in nearly two decades.
While the deals with Colombia and Panama are likely to have limited economic impact, the agreement with South Korea is designed to break down barriers between the United States and the world’s 15th-largest economy.

Supreme Court has trouble balancing strip-searches with privacy rights

The Supreme Court on Wednesday had trouble drawing a boundary for how intimately corrections officials may search those entering jail without violating constitutional rights of privacy.
After an hour of often graphic arguments about strip-searches and body-cavity inspections, the justices seemed to accept that even those picked up for minor violations could be required to strip and shower under the watchful eyes of jailers.

Herman Cain surges to front of GOP pack in new poll

With much of the Republican political world abuzz over the rapid rise of former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain in the 2012 primary race, new poll numbers show that he may even be at the head of the GOP pack.
According to the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal numbers released Tuesday, Cain leads former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney by a margin of 27 percent to 23 percent among Republican primary voters.

Nominee wants normal trade status for Russia

Mike McFaul, the National Security Council senior director for Russia, testified Wednesday that that the Obama administration’s “reset” policy with Russia is working and that Congress must terminate an antiquated law that prevents full and normalized trade relations with Moscow.
McFaul is nominated to be the next U.S. ambassador to Moscow. Although several GOP senators have serious concerns about the reset policy and are critical of what they see as Obama’s concessions to Russia, McFaul is expected to be confirmed.
