The coverlet that first lady Grace Coolidge spent two years crocheting for the Lincoln Bedroom is one of 95 objects in the Renwick Gallery’s exhibit “Something of Splendor: Decorative Arts from the White House,” which opens Saturday.
Coolidge was hoping the 1927 bedspread she embroidered with eagles and shields and her name would start a tradition among first ladies.

Once again, there was another group of Republicans begging its latest dream date to run for president. And once again, there was Mitt Romney, in his fifth year of running for president, facing questions about why he never seems to be the one Republicans are swooning over.
“I could get a quick bump in the polls by saying some outrageous and incendiary things,” Romney said Wednesday when the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” asked him why so many have praised his debate performances only to go looking for somebody else — in this case, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

One Republican called Democrats “socialist members.” A Democrat compared Republicans to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels. Another said his opponents “just make up stuff.”
And in the House of Representatives, apparently, this qualifies as a polite year.
That’s the conclusion of a new report that assessed the chamber by an unusual measure: its insults. Researchers looked for instances in which one member formally objected to a slur hurled by another.

The Environmental Protection Agency should have conducted a more detailed scientific review before determining two years ago that greenhouse gas emissions pose a threat to public health and welfare, according to a report issued Wednesday by the agency’s Office of Inspector General.
“This review did not meet all [Office of Management and Budget] requirements for peer review of a highly influential scientific assessment primarily because the review results and EPA’s response were not publicly reported, and because 1 of the 12 reviewers was an EPA employee,” the report said.
