‘Spamfather’ Opened a Real Can of Worms

Gary Thuerk, a young computer marketing manager, wanted the whole ARPANET — progenitor of the Internet — to know about his company’s upcoming product demo. There was, it seemed, only one way to do it. It was May 1978, and he was about to send the world’s first spam e- mail: “DIGITAL WILL BE GIVING A PRODUCT PRESENTATION OF THE NEWEST MEMBERS OF THE DECSYSTEM-20 FAMILY…”
