The former Godfather’s Pizza chief executive, who is the front-runner of the moment in opinion polls, entered the exchange here with his signature “9-9-9” tax overhaul plan under attack by his rivals and by an independent analysis that showed it would be a boon to the wealthy, while putting a significantly heavier burden on lower- and middle-income Americans.

State attorneys general push for Cordray to lead federal consumer agency

The White House has enlisted a bipartisan coalition of state attorneys general to help break a blockade by Senate Republicans of President Obama’s nominee to lead the controversial new federal consumer watchdog agency.
The National Association of Attorneys General on Tuesday sent a letter to Senate leaders calling nominee Richard Cordray “brilliant and balanced.” Cordray was an attorney general in Ohio known for his aggressive pursuit of foreclosure fraud before joining the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as head of enforcement in January. This summer, Obama picked him to lead the fledgling agency, and he now awaits Senate confirmation.

Military voting increased last year, report finds

Buoyed by a new law that requires states to make absentee ballots more accessible to military personnel serving overseas, troops voted at a higher rate than the general population in last year’s midterm elections, according to a new report.
Overall, 46 percent of the military cast ballots, a 21 percent increase from the 2006 midterms and slightly higher than the 45.5 percent of the general population that voted last year, according to a report released Tuesday by the Federal Voting Assistance Program.
